New Hope School Painter Wes Shaw born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania

wes shaw paintingBehind every painting is an idea. A Pictorial image is based on a concept in the imagination. This may sound peculiar to those who look at an artwork as only a visual document created by an artist for no particular reason other than to deplict a pleasing scene. But the truth is a little more complex than that. Artist Wesley Shaw explained it very well. "Every picture has a picture idea. It's an idea that you're conveying, "said the artist, who has had a long and successful career in advertising. For example, the idea could take root in illustrating a covered bridge. What do you want to say about it?" he said rhetorically. It could be the atmosphere, the architecture or the time of day.

Following it through then becomes the job. And the power of the artist’s convictions gives it strength. “Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.” Wrote novelist Victor Hugo in the late 19th Century.

Of course, an idea gathers its force from the emotion. They are not diametrically opposed; One informs the other. As William Fleming pointed out in his book, Art, Music and Ideas, contemporary art is divided into two ways of looking at the word from without and within, subjectively or objectively, though emotion or reason. “These outlooks by no means mutually exclusive, since mind is necessary for emotional awareness, and without emotional drive even the most rational proposition would be empty and devoid of meaning,” Fleming wrote.

For Wes, creating a painting is a magical thing. “I liken painting to fishing, because you never know what you’re going to come up with,” he said. “It’s that discovery and those ideas that you follow and it takes you a while to appreciate.”

In the end, Wes does not strive to duplicate what has been done in the past. “But to move on down that path that was started before me. The grappling is now mine.”
